CALABAR, Cross River State — Governor Bassey Edet Otu is set to commission new obstetric and newborn care equipment in selected health facilities across Cross River State as part of efforts to improve maternal and newborn healthcare delivery in urban and rural communities.

The equipment will be distributed to selected general hospitals and primary healthcare centres across the state, with the aim of strengthening healthcare services, improving maternal and newborn health outcomes, and enhancing access to quality care for mothers and children.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, disclosed this while expressing satisfaction with the level of preparedness of the beneficiary facilities ahead of the arrival of the equipment.

Dr. Ayuk stated that he was particularly delighted during a visit to his home facility, the Primary Health Centre, Bendeghe Ekim, in Etung Local Government Area, where he assessed the facility’s readiness to receive and utilise the new equipment.

According to the commissioner, the preparedness of the health centre, alongside other selected facilities, was encouraging and reflected the state’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery at the grassroots.

He expressed optimism that the intervention would significantly improve the capacity of healthcare facilities to provide essential obstetric and newborn services, particularly in underserved rural communities.

The planned commissioning forms part of the state government’s broader efforts to enhance healthcare infrastructure and ensure that pregnant women, newborns and other vulnerable groups have improved access to quality medical services.

With the introduction of the new equipment, the state is expected to strengthen service delivery in maternal and newborn care, while supporting healthcare professionals to provide more effective and timely interventions.

The commissioning date and the full list of beneficiary health facilities are yet to be announced.
